Workshop on Leather Export Promotion Council

Islamabad, May 14, 2016: European Union funded “Pakistan Leather Competitiveness Improvement Program” – PLCIP has successfully arranged Workshop on Leather Export Promotion Council (LEPC). The Government of Pakistan under the Strategic Trade Framework 2012-2015, proposed that the Pakistan Leather Export Promotion Council (LEPC) will be setup to look after the interests of the Pakistani leather export sector. However this aim has yet to realize. Recently at 2nd Pakistan Mega Leather Show on 28th January 2016, the Federal Minister for Commerce Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan has announced for the formation of LEPC in Pakistan. In this background, PLCIP had already arranged a study tour to India in February 2016 for peer learning from Council for Leather Export (CLE) India which has played a pivotal role in increase of India’s leather sector exports.


Among the participants from the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) Joint secretary exports Mr. Mohammad Ashraf,Gulzar Feroze (Chairman-Pakistan Tanners Association), Chaudhry Zulfiqar (Chairman-Pakistan Leather Garment Manufacturers and Exporter Association), Mr. Mohammad Sadaqat (Chairman-Pakistan Gloves Manufacturers Association) and Mr. Wasim Zakria (Chairman-Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association) participated in the workshop. During the workshop, delegates deliberated on mandate, functions and financing of LEPC. In this background, model of CLE, Services Trade Development Council, Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company were discussed in detail.


The delegates appreciated the efforts of PLCIP in organizing the workshop and showed willingness to play their role in formation of LEPC. As an outcome of the workshop, the leather sector industry associations will develop a working paper on LPEC and submit it to MoC for approval and formation of LEPC
